15 Days
Duration

After the split from Gondwana 160 million years ago, Madagascar has taken its own way of evolution. Existence in isolation has transformed the life on the 4th biggest island on the Earth into something unique and endemic. The itinerary route traces picturesque landscapes, enters remarkable national parks, stops at lovely towns and villages and gradually uncovers the face of Madagascar’s soul – its nature. The island is not seized by the “greedy” hands of the massive tourism and offers to any traveller tranquillity, authentic experience and unspoiled beauty.

SOME USEFUL INFORMATION TO HELP YOU PREPARE YOUR TRIP
The success of your trip depends heavily on the level of preparation. Our organizational knowledge and personal travel advice are at your disposal. Madagascar is a wonderful destination for travelers who take the time to prepare their trip. Here are a few tips and some useful information about the preparation of your trip. Do not hesitate to contact us to ask for more information about the country and the different circuits. It’s our pleasure to welcome you to Madagascar where you will travel through a rich cultural & natural diversity and breathtaking landscapes.

Good to know about hotels in Madagascar
Madagascar is one of the lost paradises on earth resisting to the invasion of modernity and still offers opportunities for extra-ordinary traveling conditions. To guarantee your security and comfort, and allow you to enjoy Madagascar at its real value, we work with a network of good value hotels which meet our quality requirements depending on availability on your itinerary.
Please kindly be advised that most accommodation options in the bush of Madagascar are often cut off from electricity & water networks and work on own power supply generators (solar or conventional). Often, bush hotels run on generator supply rationed in the day and into the night. In general, the generator is off from 22h on, after the guests return to their rooms after dinner. Similarly, the hot water may not be available throughout the hotel network.

Whatever itinerary you choose, we highly recommend you to bring your own torch lights to anticipate potential power cuts that can occur at any time on your route, in the bush as well as in the urban areas.

Make sure you are well insured!
Health facilities in Madagascar do not meet the European standards, thus, in case of medical emergency medical evacuation to Reunion or South Africa may be necessary.
We therefore strongly recommend that you subscribe to comprehensive travel insurance before departure. Our service does not include the cancellation or delay of journey, repatriation, theft / loss / delay of baggage and medical insurance.
Travel insurance protects you in case of emergency. Being properly insured, you can travel with peace of mind to enjoy your stay in Madagascar.
Before confirming your trip to Madagascar, we strongly encourage you to read the travel advisory, published and updated regularly by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the link http://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs_909/conseils-par-pays_12191/madagascar_12283/index.html. You will also find updated information on the security status in different parts of Madagascar.

Health Advice
In general, we recommend you to consult a specialist before your departure on health issues related to your stay in Madagascar and in particular malaria.
Check on this occasion that you update your vaccines, including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, typhoid, viral hepatitis A and B.
We also recommend you to bring your own medication to relieve minor inconveniences associated with travel as well as a first aid kit. Similarly, if you follow a specific treatment, it is important to plan your treatment during your stay.
It is strongly recommended that you drink only bottled water during your stay, and eat in the restaurants recommended by your guide.
Remember to bring insect repellent and wear light and protective clothing against mosquito bites.
Sunscreen with a high sun protection is also essential as well as hats and sunglasses for your sun protection.

Equipment for the visiting national parks
We strongly recommend that you bring a good pair of comfortable & robust walking/trekking shoes (solid sole to protect against falls, slippery collars and sharp stones), a headlamp/torch, a raincoat, a fleece jacket (depending on season and location), light and covering clothes (to protect you from cold, sun, scratches, insect bites, etc.), as well as hats and sunglasses. Nights can be fresh/cold in the bush and/or by the seaside, please include some warm clothes. A backpack is necessary to bring along with you your water bottle, camera, some cash money, sunscreen, raincoat/pullover and a small first aid kit to disinfect and treat minor injuries during the visit.
In some national parks, it is possible to swim in natural pools and / or waterfalls. We suggest you to inquire at your hotel reception before leaving the park to provide the necessary equipment for swimming.
Please also include your own mask and snorkel to enjoy marine reserves on your itinerary.
We invite you to contact us before you leave for more information.

Baggage allowance Air Madagascar [Domestic flights]
In Madagascar, most conventional tours are proposed with return to Tana on regular domestic flights. On board of Air Madagascar domestic flights, the baggage allowance is only one peace per passenger, limited to 20 kg and 5 kg hand luggage in cabin. We invite you to respect this limitation of weight in order not to pay extra luggage charge, and prefer flexible and robust rolling travel bags to rigid and voluminous suitcases. Soft travel bags are easier to load in the boot or on the vehicle roof.

Climate
The climate in Madagascar is characterized by a dry season that runs from April to October and a rainy season from November to March.
However, significant variations across regions are: more moisture to the east, with a dry season very narrowed, and instead significantly and prolonged heat wave in southern dry period. Cyclones may occur between November and March.

There are significant differences in temperature between day and night in the highlands and in the bush. It is strongly recommended to provide a sweater fleece by a traveler and a pair of jeans and closed walk to visit the parks and the nights can be cool shoes. Also provide a waterproof / raincoat because it can rain at any time, especially in the areas of primary forest and national parks. Sun exposure and the presence of mosquitoes is another factor to be taken into account in predicting light and protective clothing.

Power Supply
Madagascar is subject to regular power cuts (both in cities and in the bush). It should be noted that the power supply is 220V with French type sockets. Some hotels do not have sockets in the rooms to avoid the use of hair dryers that can damage the generators. Please contact the hotel reception before you use/charge electric equipment in your room. In the absence of sockets in the rooms, you can always recharge your electronics at the reception or the hotel bar.

Safety Tips
Madagascar is a peaceful country with nice people, smiling and hospitable. However, we must not forget that Madagascar is among the poorest countries in the world. For a pleasant stay in Madagascar, simple safety precautions and rules and common sense apply to all travelers. Please do not leave your personal belongings and valuable items (camera, mobile phones, watch, VISA card, cash money, etc.) without vigilance and always keep an eye on them. Please leave your jewels & expensive watches at home or they might be stolen/lost.

Currency and exchange rates
The monetary unit is the Ariary (MGA or AR), which in 2005 replaced the Malagasy franc (FMG). It’s often possible that the prices are given in Malagasy francs, ask precisely to avoid misunderstandings as 1 AR = 5 FMG.
Indicative exchange rate 1 EUR = 3 300 MGA
Official rate available on the website of the Central Bank of Madagascar
http://www.banque-centrale.mg/
While traveling in the country, make sure you bring enough cash money in small cuts between. In most cases, you will only be able to pay your extras in cash. Only some developed hotels accept payments by card.

Payment cards VISA and MASTER
Important: In Madagascar, MASTER Card has limited use. However, most retailers take VISA. The fees vary from one institution to another.
The eventual settlement of hotel bills or airline tickets with a credit card may incur fees ranging from 5 to 8%. Please do not forget to carry some cash money in small coupons for tips.

Cash withdrawal and cash expenses in the bush
For obvious security reasons, we do not recommend carrying along important sums of money in cash. You can change some USD or EUR currency at the airport upon arrival and make withdrawals thereafter.
By following the advice of your guide, you can make regular withdrawals during your passage through major cities and avoid carrying large amounts of cash on you.
While traveling in the country, remember to bring enough cash and small cuts between two cities. In the bush, you can settle your extras in cash whereas in big cities/hotels payment by VISA / MASTER is available.
We will be happy to send you information and an estimation of the amount you will need to perform the visits indicated in your program.

Some restrictions to consider
Rental motorcycle, ATV, as well as scuba diving activities etc. can only be done under professional supervision for people who hold a driving license. Likewise, scuba diving requires a certification. Please contact us for further information.
In order to perform safely these activities in Madagascar, it is essential to take appropriate insurance options.
Some tours may be unsuitable for persons with reduced mobility, suffering from vertigo or claustrophobia. Similarly, some excursions are not suitable for children under 6 years.
Boat transfers are provided by professional service providers on site. We always require lifejackets on board. However, it happens that service providers do not meet our requirements. We advise you to bring your own life jackets and wear on you during excursions at sea.
We also thank you for advising us about any dietary restrictions and allergies during our exchanges.
We remain at your disposal for further information on any matter relating to the choice of itinerary and excursions.

Even though we strictly require respect for all safety rules on site for all types of sports and excursions at sea activity, these practices can be risky because of the specific circumstances in Madagascar. By accepting the present proposal, those who subscribe to this type of activities in Madagascar take knowledge of the risk involved and take full responsibility.
MADABLUE declines all liability in case of accident during the practice of these activities as well as the absence of life jackets on board vessels and accidents related to the lack of life jackets on board, or any other type of failure to comply with safety during the execution of the tour.
